At a recent TAC Meeting, SWOCEA was on the Agenda. We now know that our jobs will not be jeopardized by joining SWOCEA:
Comment: Did the AOC look at them as a legitimate group? Did the AOC develop a relationship with them? Can a teacher join SWOCEA individually? I know some teachers who want to join for solidarity.
Question: Would involvement in this group violate our contract?
AOC: SWOCEA has not been recognized by the AOC, however, a teacher can join if he/she wants. That would not be a violation of the contract.
Question: So if a teacher joins a particular group, this is not cause for termination is it?
Question: What if the group advocates for something against the contract?
AOC: Assuming the teacher does not advocate specifically for that particular issue, no, the teacher would not be in violation of the contract.
As Catholic Educators, we are supporting our Church teachings to exercise our civil rights to organize and negotiate proper working conditions, and above all, ensure our dignity. The Southwest Ohio Catholic Educators Association’s constitution is ratified, and is encompassed under the National Association of Catholic School Teachers (NACST).
